Provides a perspective on the evolution of traditional American literature beginning with the writings of the first European explorers and Native American oral tradition. Features selected essays, autobiographical writings, poems, fiction, and drama from the mid-15th century to 1865, including the work of women and ethnic minorities, which have contributed to American thought.
